چکیده
Abstract Palm oil mill effluent (POME) generated from the production of palm contains organic and inorganic contaminants that can be a nutrient source for microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, microalgae. In this study, POME was treated using combined anaerobic (R1) microalgae (R2) in down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor. Chlorella pyrenoidosa immobilized carriers R2 LED lights were used 12 hours per day to support growth. The DHS reactors continuously operated 165 days three phases with different COD loading rates, namely 3, 6, kg-COD/m³·day Phase 1, 2, respectively. hydraulic retention time (HRT) set at 46 min 52 R1 R2, highest removal rate achieved 6.93 4.85 addition, maximum phosphate 68% both reactors. Increased concentration nitrate R-2 indicated nitrification may occur pH relatively stable neutral conditions, while value slightly increased. Based on visual observation, bacteria biofilm also grew reactor (R2). Synergistic bacteria-microalgae play an important role pollutant removal. results study show alternative treatment because they have shorter HRT applied small area.

A Review of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome) Water Treatment
Palm oil is one of the two most important vegetable oils in the world’s oil and fats market. The extraction and purification processes generate different kinds of waste generally known as palm oil mill effluent (POME). The environmental impact of POME cannot be over emphasized; hence the need for treatment measures to reduce these impacts before discharge. Therefore, this paper reviews the proc...
متن کاملThe Performance Evaluation of Anaerobic Methods for Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Treatment: A Review
Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is an important source of inland water pollution when released into local rivers or lakes without treatment. In the process of palm oil milling, POME is generat‐ ed through sterilization of fresh oil palm fruit bunches, clarification of palm oil and effluent from hydro-cyclone operations [Borja et al.,1996a]. POME is a viscous brown liquid with fine suspended solid...
متن کاملPretreated Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Digestion in an Up-Flow Anaerobic Sludge Fixed Film Bioreactor: a Comparative Study
An up-flow anaerobic sludge fixed film (UASFF) bioreactor was used to treat the pretreated palm oil mill effluent (POME). In physical pretreatment, POME was pre-settled for 2 h and the supernatant was fed into the reactor. In chemical pretreatment, optimum dosages of cationic and anionic polymers were used. Experiments of pretreated POME digestion were conducted based on a central composite fac...
متن کاملAnaerobic Treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent in Pilot-Scale Anaerobic EGSB Reactor
Large volumes of untreated palm oil mill effluent (POME) pose threat to aquatic environment due to the presence of very high organic content. The present investigation involved two pilot-scale anaerobic expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors, continuously operated for 1 year to treat POME. Setting HRT at 9.8 d, the anaerobic EGSB reactors reduced COD from 71179 mg/L to 12341 mg/L and recy...
